Data Studio

Datasets, charts and dashboards with the access rules built in. Pick data, ask a question, pin the answer - and the same chart shows each reader only the rows they are allowed to see.

The eight studios About Data Studio

What it is for

Never more than two steps
Pick a dataset, ask a question in words or by pressing fields. The chart is there; pin it to a dashboard.
Governed at the source
Four roles - viewer, analyst, editor, owner - with row policies and column masks. A reader cannot get around them with a clever query.
The platform's data, and yours
Lists, apps, processes and the cartable are sources already. Add PostgreSQL, MySQL, files and uploads beside them.
Dashboards people arrange
Tiles on a grid, filters across them, pivots for people who want to turn the data over.
Charts that travel
A chart can sit in an Office document, an app, a chat message or a person's Home - and still obeys its reader's access.
Alerts and a record
An alert watches a number and tells people when it crosses a line. Every query is recorded: who asked which dataset.

Getting started

  1. Open Data Studio and press Ctrl+K to pick a dataset.
  2. Ask a question, or drag fields to draw a chart.
  3. Pin it to a dashboard and share the dashboard.

Tasks

Show each manager their own rows

  1. Open the dataset's access.
  2. Add a row policy that compares a column with the reader.
  3. Every chart on that dataset now shows each reader their own rows.

Hide a sensitive column

  1. Open the dataset's access.
  2. Mask the column for the roles that should not read it.
  3. They see the chart; the column is emptied, hashed or shortened for them.

Put a chart in a document

  1. In Office Studio, choose Insert chart.
  2. Pick the chart.
  3. It is drawn into the document with the reader's own numbers.

Questions

Can analysts write SQL?

Yes, over governed views: the policies and masks apply to a hand-written query exactly as they do to a chart.

Where does the analysis run?

In an analytical engine on your own server. Data does not leave it to be charted.
